White-tailed Ptarmigan
Description: An uncommon resident above treeline, usually found singly or in family groups in areas of grassy alpine tundra. Quiet and well-camouflaged at all seasons. In the winter, ptarmigans flock up and move to slightly lower elevations (still above treeline); really the only good places to see them in winter are Guanella Pass in Clear Creek County and Little Molas Lake in San Juan County. They are at Loveland Pass also, but Loveland Pass in winter is a far more dangerous proposition than Guanella, so we hesitate to recommend it.
